USA President Donald Trump announced that the USA will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement on the 1st of June, 2017. Trump, who stated that he would protect Pittsburgh city, which is rich in coal mines, “I was elected to represent Pittsburgh, not Paris”. In the G7 Summit, which put the future steps of the Paris Climate agreement, which was signed by the USA, by former USA President Barack Obama in 2015, the EU leaders tried to persuade Trump in order to dissuade him from his decision, Russia, China, and Canada made statements about the USA’s obligation to apply the requirements of the agreement[1].

This statement of Trump got reactions from both inside the country and outside the country: From country leaders to academicians, to civil society representatives, many people stated that Trump’s decision is a step backward both for the USA and the world.

There are winners and losers of this statement: With the statement, it is expressed that coal executives, the GOP and conservative movement, and China will have important gains in terms of their agendas, but Donald Trump will suffer from his sudden decision. In addition, it is stated that, first and foremost, corporate America and 194 countries that signed the agreement and all life on the world will experience the negative effects of this decision in the long and short term[2].

Paris Climate Agreement

Paris Climate Agreement is a letter of agreement, which was shaped according to the grassroots demands introduced after not getting the intended outcome out of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which was opened for signature after the “Rio Environment and Development and Conference” (1992) and the Kyoto Protocol, which was signed within this convention in 1997 on the base of the volunteer contributions and differentiated responsibilities.

The agreement was adopted at the 21st Conference of the Parties held in Paris in 2015. The Agreement, which was opened to signatures on April 22, 2016, officially went into operation on November 4, 2016 and became the fastest stepped in environmental agreement in the history of UN.
